Ever since developer Wild Sheep Studio and publisher PQube first revealed Adorable Adventures, it has been high on the wishlist of anyone seeking a cozy escape. This isn’t just another exploration game – it’s a nature-soaked journey that puts you in the tiny hooves of a baby boar, lost and searching for its family in the sun-dappled landscapes of France’s Cévennes National Park.
Sniffing Out the Fun
The tale of Adorable Adventures is brought to life by Maxime, the park ranger narrator, and is simple enough for even a child to follow. Maxime gives the journey a warm, storybook quality that makes the adventure even inviting for younger players. You play as Boris, a charming little boar who finds himself lost after a forest fire. Your mother is trapped in a shed nearby, but you can’t save her alone – you’ll need your brothers and sisters to pull it off. This means exploring the surroundings to track them down, though each sibling has their own set of demands before they’ll agree to help with the main mission. Each sibling feels distinct thanks to their own personality quirks and puzzle-like requests, which helps the journey feel more engaging than a straightforward fetch quest.
Aside from jumping, climbing, and dashing through obstacles, the core gameplay revolves around the “Scent-o-Meter”. You sniff your way through a beautifully detailed but noticeably linear world, full of invisible walls. Every scent leaves a uniquely colored trail leading to its source. The catch? Scents often overlap and overwhelm the meter.
To complete a quest, you have to manually select your preferred scent while filtering out “distracting” smells. You can only ignore these distractions once you’ve fully detected and eliminated them—usually by finding and picking up a specific number of objects. In theory, it sounds simple; in practice, managing the UI sidebar to toggle these scents is clunky, and the game frequently resets your selections for no apparent reason. Beyond the main family-reunion quest, Adorable Adventures also offers more side content than expected, including collectibles, hidden objectives, and playful diversions that reward curious exploration.
The Struggle of Being a Piglet
While the environments are large and lush, navigating them can be a chore. Boris tends to slide around uncontrollably while sprinting, and the climbing mechanics feel jittery. You’ll find yourself dashing often just to cover ground, accompanied by a rather monotonous loop of music that kicks in every time you pick up speed.
That said, there’s no denying that Adorable Adventures is a visual treat. The diverse flora and fauna look fantastic, and making Unreal Engine run this stutter-free is a feat that deserves a compliment. Boris and his siblings are elevated by charming animations and expressive little behaviors that make each piglet feel genuinely lovable.
However, that polish clearly doesn’t extend to the code logic. The game suffers from several game-breaking bugs, especially if you don’t follow instructions in the exact sequence the game expects. In my playthrough, one of Boris’ brothers simply failed to spawn, halting all progress. Even reloading older saves didn’t help, forcing a complete restart. While there is a welcome “unstuck” feature for when Boris gets wedged between rocks, it sends you all the way back to the start of the level, which might even trigger some of these progression bugs.
Final Thoughts
Adorable Adventures is undeniably cute and brimming with heart, featuring a surprising amount of collectibles and personality for each piglet. However, the clunky UI and technical flaws make it feel unfinished. Even with its rough edges, the core experience remains enjoyable enough that its charm often outweighs the frustration. It’s a short, unique journey for cozy game fans, but it desperately needs a few patches to truly let its charm shine.
