After a decade in development, the hardcore space combat simulator In The Black is officially entering Early Access on Steam on May 5. Created by veterans behind MechWarrior 2, Crysis, and X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, the game delivers a hyper-realistic pilot experience focused on physics-based dogfighting and corporate warfare.

Unlike typical space shooters, In The Black treats science with respect. Set 200 years in the future, you operate as a private contractor in a solar system governed by megacorporations. Most of the time, you’ll pilot nuclear-powered spacecraft across iconic locations like the rings of Saturn, using lasers, missiles, and railguns in high-stakes tactical engagements.
The game will support both single-player and multiplayer modes, including 2–4 player co-op missions and competitive 5v5 PvP in “BloodSport” arenas. Success in these contracts allows pilots to rank up and unlock advanced 23rd-century ships, which can be heavily customized to suit specific tactical needs.
Built for simulation enthusiasts, the title features deep support for HOTAS and HOSAS setups, head and eye tracking, and ultrawide displays. Its commitment to grounded sci-fi has even earned it the Atomic Rockets Seal of Approval. A demo is currently available on Steam for those who want to test their piloting skills ahead of the Early Access launch.
