Dragon Quest Franchise Reaches 100 Million Sales Milestone During 40th Anniversary Celebration
DaRmaZat Square Enix has announced that the Dragon Quest franchise has surpassed 100 million copies sold worldwide. The milestone coincides with the series’ 40th anniversary and follows a sequence of successful HD remakes, including Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, and early 2026’s Dragon Quest VII Reimagined.
In a video message celebrating the achievement, series creator Yuji Horii thanked global fans for their multi-generational support since the original game’s 1986 debut.
The milestone highlights a busy period for the JRPG franchise across multiple platforms. Alongside the current development of mainline entry Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams, Square Enix is preparing to launch Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age for Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24, 2026.
Additionally, the spin-off title Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is scheduled to release on December 3, 2026, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store. A free playable demo is now available as well.
