If you are tired of modern first-person shooters that hold your hand at every turn, solo developer FearForge Studios has a chaotic antidote for you. Released today in Early Access on Steam, Project RAZE: Fall of Terra is a flashy, hyper-kinetic sci-fi arena shooter set aboard a colossal spaceship where standing still is simply not an option. Even in its current Early Access state, the game already feels surprisingly substantial, offering ten handcrafted missions, four memorable boss encounters, adjustable Heat levels, global leaderboards, and a progression system built around more than 2,100 possible loadout combinations.
A Story Built Around the Action
Set in the year 2563, Project RAZE: Fall of Terra takes place during the collapse of Terra Supremis, humanity’s greatest stronghold. After centuries of expansion across the cosmos, the colony is suddenly attacked by the Auraliths, a powerful faction returning from deep space with a massive robotic warfleet under the guidance of their machine god, VORA. Taking control of RZ-01, the most advanced combat android created by Terra Supremis, your mission is simple: infiltrate the invading warships and dismantle the assault from within.
While this setup provides an interesting sci-fi backdrop, do not expect a deep, gripping space opera. The narrative primarily serves as a framework for the game’s high-speed combat rather than the main attraction. Your journey begins in a central space station hub, where an integrated AI companion assists you and you can practice your abilities before launching into the campaign. It is a functional but sterile environment, and the game provides no map or waypoint markers to guide you.
While the hub is visually muted, the actual missions are surprisingly colorful and diverse. The level design takes you through futuristic indoor corridors as well as outdoor sections, with impressive reflections on metallic surfaces helping to sell the aesthetic. You will not have much time to admire the scenery, however.
A Cruel Countdown
Before launching a mission, you can also adjust the Heat Level, which functions as the game’s difficulty modifier. Do not mistake this for an easy mode, though. Even on the lowest Heat, Project RAZE quickly becomes fast, frantic, and demanding. Instead of relying on a traditional health bar, the game uses time itself as your most valuable resource. Every hit inflicted by rogue droids causes a desynchronization that shaves precious seconds off your remaining timer, making every mistake immediately costly.
Success depends on quickly mastering Raze’s movement, dash, and gunplay. Fortunately, the shooting itself feels excellent, with weapons that pack a satisfying punch and responsive feedback. However, because enemy AI attacks aggressively and often in overwhelming numbers, the difficulty ramps up surprisingly quickly, culminating in the regular boss encounters.
Where the game truly shines during these chaotic moments is in its technical execution. For a solo-developed indie project still in Early Access, the visual presentation is remarkably polished, and performance remains consistently smooth. Even when the screen is filled with lasers, explosions, and swarms of droids, the framerate stays rock-solid. The energetic electronic soundtrack complements the action perfectly, keeping the pace and adrenaline high throughout every encounter.
Arsenal Progression and Combat Customization
While raw mechanical skill sits at the heart of Project RAZE, the game also offers a considerable amount of build customization. Throughout the Early Access campaign, you unlock weapons across four distinct categories, alongside new movement abilities, grenades, Combat Modules, and powerful augments that further shape each run.
These systems combine into more than 2,100 unique loadout combinations, allowing you to experiment with different weapons, special attacks, mobility options, and passive upgrades while chasing faster completion times and higher leaderboard rankings. Rather than simply reaching the end of a mission, Project RAZE encourages repeated runs to shave seconds off your completion time and climb the global leaderboards, making replayability a core part of the experience.
Preliminary Thoughts
With Chapter 2 already planned as a free update for Early Access owners, alongside additional quality-of-life improvements and new content, Project RAZE: Fall of Terra lays down a solid foundation. While the difficulty curve becomes steep very quickly, responsive controls, excellent performance, stylish visuals, and an energetic electronic soundtrack combine to create a rewarding gameplay loop that strongly encourages replayability.
Players who enjoy mechanically demanding shooters that reward mastery, optimization, and speedrunning will find plenty of reasons to keep an eye on this promising indie project.
