A behind-the-scenes look at the historical recreation of 17th-century Europe has arrived as the first episode of a new developer diary series, titled Behind the Shadows, has been released for the upcoming title 1666: Amsterdam. The title is scheduled to launch via PC Early Access later this year.
The inaugural entry, “The Vision: The Real City That Became a Myth”, features insights from Creative Director Patrice Désilets, Executive Producer Jean-François Boivin, Researcher Éléa Gadéa, and Senior Level Designer Maxime Fortin regarding the foundational design philosophy behind the project.
The documentary episode reveals that the entire development team traveled to Amsterdam in 2024 to conduct firsthand environmental research on the city’s canals, architecture, acoustics, and structural scale. This on-site data informed the creation of the game’s core traversal and exploration loops. The footage highlights a design approach that grants players high spatial agency, enabling them to navigate rooftops, explore the interiors of accessible neighborhood houses, and utilize a feline companion to infiltrate buildings through open windows.
Filmed on location at the historic Château Ramezay in Old Montreal, this episode serves as the starting point for a recurring series intended to detail the game’s production cycle leading up to its release. 1666: Amsterdam is scheduled to launch in Early Access for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store later in 2026, with console versions planned for a subsequent release window.
