Square Enix has released the highly acclaimed RPG Star Ocean: The Second Story R for the Nintendo Switch 2. This 2.5D remake of the beloved 1998 classic revitalizes the second installment of the franchise by fusing nostalgic 2D pixel characters with gorgeous 3D environments.

Already available on the original Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam, this updated edition arrives on Nintendo’s latest hybrid platform with enhanced visuals and modern quality-of-life improvements such as fast-travel and streamlined item crafting.
The narrative follows Federation officer Claude, who finds himself stranded on an uncharted planet. While searching for a way home, he crosses paths with a young girl named Rena, drawing them both into an epic journey to save her people in accordance with an ancient prophecy. Players can choose to experience the story from either Claude’s or Rena’s perspective, unlocking different recruitable allies, deep skill choices, and distinct narrative endings through localized Private Actions.
In celebration of the release, Square Enix also announced that Star Ocean: The Second Story R and Star Ocean The Divine Force will make their debut on the GOG storefront on July 28, accompanied by a series of promotional franchise discounts across various platforms.
