The development team behind DreadOut 3 has released a new design update detailing how environmental layout directly shapes the game’s horror experience. The game is scheduled to launch on PC via Steam.

Instead of relying on traditional horror imagery like blood, bones, or ritual altars, the sequel focuses heavily on the psychological tension of the spaces themselves. The level design heavily leverages claustrophobic, ordinary environments inspired by daily life – such as narrow alleys, dead-end streets, and cramped rooms that restrict player movement and vision – to create an oppressive sense of unease before any supernatural elements even appear.
The update also reveals a structural shift in how the game’s safe zones operate. While the previous game featured the public Maung District as a central hub, the upcoming title introduces a more private and personal operations base for returning protagonist Linda. Because multi-layered investigations play a major role in the sequel, this base serves as a dedicated central command where Linda can return to organize her findings, connect clues from notes and photos, save the game, and recharge her IrisPhone.
DreadOut 3 continues Linda’s journey as she descends into a twisted dimension based on Indonesian folklore. The sequel expands the scope of the series by introducing day-and-night cycles and environments that actively shift between the physical world and a spiritual plane. Gameplay will continue to blend third-person exploration with a first-person smartphone camera mechanic used to solve puzzles and fend off vengeful ghosts, allowing players to build out a supernatural database known as the Ghostpedia.
