Third-person action-adventure game South of Midnight will launch for PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 on March 31, publisher Xbox Game Studios and developer Compulsion Games have announced.
The game originally debuted on April 8, 2025 for Xbox Series X and Series S and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store. With the upcoming release, the supernatural action-adventure will become available to a wider audience across additional platforms. When the game debuted on Xbox, we already highlighted the experience in our ‘So We Played’ column!
Alongside the standard release, players will also be able to pick up the “Weaver’s Edition”, a special package featuring a variety of physical and digital extras. This edition includes a copy of the game, an official art book, the original soundtrack composed by Olivier Deriviere, the Boo-Hag comic created by Rob Guillory, the music video “Songs & Tales of South of Midnight”, and a documentary titled Weaving Hazel’s Journey, Director’s Cut.
Developed by the team behind Contrast and We Happy Few, South of Midnight is a third-person action-adventure set in a surreal interpretation of the American Deep South. The game blends folklore, magical abilities, and atmospheric storytelling into a dark modern fairytale.
Players take on the role of Hazel, a young woman whose life changes dramatically after a devastating hurricane tears through her hometown of Prospero. In the aftermath of the disaster, Hazel discovers that she has become a Weaver—someone capable of repairing broken spirits and fractured bonds through powerful magical abilities.
As she learns to wield these new powers, Hazel must confront supernatural creatures inspired by Southern folklore. Many of these beings are twisted by trauma, and players will use weaving magic both to battle dangerous entities known as Haints and to uncover the emotional scars that created them.
The adventure takes players across the haunting landscapes of Prospero, a fictional county shaped by Southern Gothic influences. The world features lush yet decaying environments, distinct regional areas, and a visual style that blends stylized art with eerie storytelling. Music also plays a major role in shaping the atmosphere, drawing inspiration from the cultural and historical roots of the American South.
Throughout her journey, Hazel will not only fight monstrous threats but also unravel the complicated history of her own family, confronting themes of identity, legacy, and belonging as she searches for a path forward.
