Simone Developer and publisher 11 bit studios has released a gameplay trailer for The Alters’ upcoming paid downloadable content expansion, titled Last Variable. The premium story expansion is scheduled to launch on July 13.
Last Variable offers a massive 20-hour narrative addition that deeply expands the base game’s psychological sci-fi framework. The plot takes place years after protagonist Jan Scientist originally refused to evacuate the inhospitable planet. Awakening from cryosleep, Jan realizes he cannot manage the transforming world alone and begins creating specialized new versions of himself – including a Geologist, Biologist, Chemist, and Physicist. Together, the team must navigate years-long planetary cycles, build underground facilities, and establish protective Field Labs across changing sectors to unlock higher scientific research tiers.
Introducing high-stakes survival management, the planet in Last Variable dynamically reacts to terraforming efforts by triggering escalating environmental hazards like earthquakes and severe radiation surges. Furthermore, the expansion emphasizes long-term consequences and mortality; the Alters face natural aging if they remain outside the protection of newly researched Cryosleep Chambers. Players must manage the survival of their clones while handling the friction of their differing scientific philosophies before the team fractures under pressure.
