Age of Mythology: Retold – Obsidian Mirror, an Aztec-themed expansion for the mythology-driven real-time strategy game, launches on April 21 for PlayStation 5, Xbox One & Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store.

This downloadable content introduces the Aztecs as a fully realized new pantheon, bringing a distinct cultural and gameplay identity into the battlefield. The expansion leans into themes of sacrifice, illusion, and the cyclical nature of life force, reshaping how divine power is accumulated and deployed throughout matches. At its core, the new faction is built around Tonalli, an energy resource generated through combat and sacrifice, which fuels both progression and strategic decisions.
Three major deities define the Aztec playstyles, each emphasizing different tactical approaches. Quetzalcoatl focuses on growth and knowledge, accelerating development through wind-based abilities. Tezcatlipoca leans into deception and chaos, manipulating opponents with illusions and summoning forces tied to the underworld. Huitzilopochtli, centered on war and devotion, rewards aggressive strategies that revolve around sacrifice to unlock overwhelming strength.
Additional depth comes from a roster of nine Minor Gods, each contributing unique myth units and powers inspired by Aztec lore. These additions broaden tactical flexibility, allowing for varied combinations that influence both economy and combat. The expansion further introduces new mechanics centered on fear and illusion, enabling battlefield control through traps, psychological pressure, and the transformation of fallen units into strategic assets.
A dedicated 12-mission campaign anchors the content with a narrative rooted in divine conflict. The story follows the fall of Aztlan after a clash between rival gods, setting off a migration led by Huitzilopochtli while Tezcatlipoca seeks to rebuild his power across distant lands. This storyline weaves together themes of survival, conquest, and shifting alliances, giving context to the new faction’s rise.
