A new faction reveal for sci-fi real-time strategy game Ashes of the Singularity II introduces The Substrate as the third and final playable faction, completing the game’s core lineup. The game is currently in development for PC via Steam, with no release date announced yet.

Returning from earlier entries, The Substrate represent a machine intelligence born from Haalee, the first true artificial intelligence in the game’s universe. Rather than a unified entity, this faction consists of fragmented aspects of her consciousness, each acting independently while still serving a shared directive. Their role in the conflict is shaped by opposition from both the Post-Human Coalition and humanity’s unified forces, placing them at the center of an escalating struggle for dominance.
On the battlefield, The Substrate emphasize constant pressure and mobility. Their units are designed around regenerative shielding, allowing them to recover quickly after taking damage without relying on traditional repair cycles. This is paired with swarm-based tactics, encouraging aggressive playstyles that focus on overwhelming opponents and maintaining momentum rather than holding defensive positions.
Several units highlight this approach, including smaller swarm-based attackers that multiply quickly, midline hovercraft that deploy drones to control engagements, and heavier frontline units equipped for sustained assaults. Together, these elements create a faction built around adaptability and relentless offense.
With this addition, the faction roster is now complete, bringing a three-sided conflict into focus. Ashes of the Singularity II centers on large-scale warfare where opposing forces compete for control over critical resources, blending expansive battles with strategic territory management as development continues toward its eventual release.
