Initially released on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch to widespread acclaim, the award-winning sci-fi thriller 1000xRESIST now lands on the Switch 2. Developed by sunset visitor and published by Fellow Traveller, this narrative-driven adventure plunges you into a dark, dystopian future where an alien presence has driven humanity underground. Then, to make matters worse, a devastating revelation suddenly forces you to question your entire reality.
The increasingly surreal journey begins with a striking flash-forward and a heavy dose of sci-fi lore with unique terminology. As Watcher, one of six special clone sisters created by Iris, the sole survivor and the woman known as the ALLMOTHER, your existence revolves around dutiful service. Each sister bears a crucial responsibility within the underground bunker known as the Orchard, from administration to engineering. But that doesn’t mean everyone agrees with the way things are run. Rebellion quickly becomes a major theme, and the story isn’t shy about bringing drama and violence into the mix as well.
Rewinding to where it all began, 1000xRESIST‘s narrative quickly weaves you into a dense web of characters, all with their personal aspirations and problems, including your parents, Jiao, Big Bang Fire (BBF), Fixer, Healer, Principal, and your loyal floating AI companion, Secretary, among many others. Keeping track of who is who and how they fit into the story takes a moment to adjust to, but every single character proves vital to the unfolding drama right up until the credits roll on one of its multiple endings, with significant choices along the way that only you can make.
“A family that eats together, stays together.”
In fact, the plot is a pressure cooker filled with multi-layered themes, including a politically charged message about Hong Kong’s struggle for independence. Everything is symbolic, packed with meaning and emotion. Even if you only pick up on half of it, there’s still an enormous amount to take in. For example, Iris’s father repeatedly coming back to his “A family that eats together, stays together” slogan throughout the game eventually got stuck in my head.
At its core, 1000xRESIST plays out as a narrative walking simulator where you will spend most of your time talking to people and finding ways to trigger the next piece of dialogue, while also solving subtle environmental puzzles and, on occasion, racing against the clock. You’ll frequently converse with NPCs, seek out specific locations or objects, and select the right dialogue options based on what is unfolding on screen.
A key mechanic involves scrubbing forward and backward through time to explore memories within surreal, symbolic spaces – sometimes using what you uncover to unlock progress in the present. Time travel isn’t just a gameplay loop either; it is woven directly into the fabric of the story itself.
And I haven’t even mentioned the sound yet. Often utilizing just a handful of musical notes combined with synthetic feedback, panning, and echoing reverb, 1000xRESIST‘s deeply atmospheric synth-driven soundtrack stands as one of the finest soundtracks I’ve ever experienced in a game. In fact, the music creates an unforgettable sense of lingering atmosphere and emotion. On top of that, exceptional English voice acting – punctuated by occasional Chinese phrases – delivers deeply chilling performances, despite the lack of lip-syncing.
“One of the finest soundtracks I’ve ever experienced in a game.”
On the Switch 2, the visual fidelity is naturally a little more blocky than on the other console platforms, even in handheld mode. The graphics menu also doesn’t offer adjustable settings, and you can’t tweak individual options to compensate. However, the trade-off works in your favor: performance remains exceptionally smooth, and the lighting and atmospheric environments still look breathtaking, preserving much of what makes the game’s presentation so striking.
Final Thoughts
What elevates 1000xRESIST for me is its phenomenal writing and atmospheric audiovisual presentation. The story’s many layers and double meanings, with italicized words serving as subtle references for attentive readers and listeners, are among the most memorable examples of game storytelling I’ve come across.
Taking this surreal journey on Switch 2 in no way diminishes the sheer brilliance of 1000xRESIST. Playing out like a deeply personal, interactive cinematic parable, it quickly draws you into moral questions about self-determination, trust, and the consequences of living under someone else’s control. Despite its fatalistic opening, the pivotal choices you make give you a profound sense of agency. For me, that is what turns this emotional sci-fi drama into an absolute must-play masterpiece.
