On paper, Starsand Island sounds like a very familiar, perhaps even overly well-worn, recipe: farming, crafting, building relationships, and settling into a colorful, anime-style community. When I first previewed its Early Access build, I was caught off guard by its optimistic energy, rich world, and surprising depth.
Now with its 1.0 release, Seed Sparkle Lab delivers a game overflowing with content and genuine charm, with considerably more to offer than the version I previewed. Online multiplayer for up to four players is now part of the experience, alongside additional relationship content, new story events and dating activities, a brand-new Starsand Shop, and plenty of new building options.
But first, let’s rewind to where it all begins. After creating your character in a creator packed with all the bells and whistles, your adventure kicks off when you inherit a plot of land from your grandfather on the idyllic Starsand Island. From there, you set out to build a new life and become part of the island’s lively community.
Once on the island, you’ll start exploring a surprisingly vast map filled with countryside farms, dense forests, coastal villages, and sunny beaches, with a heavy focus on crafting tools and materials. Crafter is only one of the five main professions, as you can also take up Farmer, Angler, Rancher, or Explorer. Mentors for each of these professions can be found across the island, teaching you the tricks of the trade through well-crafted cutscenes. Notably, the 1.0 release also puts these five professions in the spotlight with the new Pumpkin Carnival, where each one comes with its own activities and rewards. Getting to know the islanders is another big part of the experience. You can make friends, help them with quests, and build up your affection with them through your interactions.
What gives Starsand Island its unique flavor is its playful personality. Beneath its cheerful exterior, however, the game also has a surprisingly dark side. Unlocking a sealed stone door opens up the Moonlit Forest, an ominous region that shifts the gameplay toward combat. Equipped with a slingshot and a defensive sentry bot, you take on aggressive creatures and bosses. The contrast between crafting and farming during the day and surviving at night provides some very welcome variety and works surprisingly well.
To get around the massive island, you can ride mounts, use a skateboard, or rent vehicles like scooters through an in-game phone app. Getting around is much quicker this way, although I did run into a strange issue with a rented scooter. During one quest, it stopped responding entirely to both controller and keyboard inputs, only to work normally again once the quest state changed.
More broadly, progression reliability remains Starsand Island‘s most serious issue. During my playthrough, even the main quest line suddenly became blocked. Closing the game or reloading the current save didn’t help, and only rolling back to an earlier save file fixed it. I also encountered cases where objectives failed to update, NPCs popped up in the wrong locations and stood idle, or characters got completely stuck – alongside plenty of other bugs scattered across the island.
That said, most of the UI issues and performance problems I encountered during the preview have already been addressed through multiple patches. To be fair, frame-rate dips can still occur from time to time, but these are mostly limited to heavily decorated areas. The developers have also put considerable work into improving the audio experience, although occasional stuttering can still occur.
Final Thoughts
Starsand Island is a delightful, content-packed life simulator that easily expands beyond basic genre tropes. Its mix of cozy island living, quirky characters, crafting and combat, makes for a very engaging loop. However, this full release is still held back by persistent quest-state bugs and minor performance hiccups. Seed Sparkle Lab has built a wonderful foundation, but addressing the remaining bugs and giving the game another round of polish will be key to bringing this promising island adventure to its full potential.
