Nintendo closed out its highly anticipated June 2026 Nintendo Direct showcase with a monumental surprise, officially announcing a ground-up remake of its definitive Nintendo 64 masterpiece, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Built from the foundation up exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2, the title is currently scheduled to launch sometime in 2026.

The cinematic reveal teaser offered fans a nostalgic look at the game’s iconic opening setting, dropping viewers directly into the peaceful, isolated canopy of the Kokiri Forest. The footage showcased the ancient Great Deku Tree silently looking over its fairy-guided inhabitants, lingering on a detailed shot of a young, sleeping Link waiting to be summoned by destiny.
Visually, the brief presentation signaled a notable art style shift away from the distinct, cel-shaded painting aesthetics of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. Instead, this remake targets a modernized, hyper-detailed approach to realism, spotlighting intricate dynamic lighting and complex textures, such as ambient reflections bounding directly off of Link’s hair.
While Nintendo has kept strict gameplay details and specific mechanical updates closely under wraps, this project marks the third official iteration of the 1998 classic following its original release and the subsequent 2011 3DS hardware overhaul.
Given the upcoming timeline, the 2026 launch window lines up with the historic 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda franchise. Nintendo has promised to share a deeper breakdown of gameplay features, optimization tweaks, and a concrete calendar release date at a later point.
