Square Enix, in collaboration with co-developer Lancarse, has officially announced Final Fantasy Resonance, marking the long-running franchise’s first official foray into the popular HD-2D aesthetic. The standalone tactical turn-based RPG is scheduled to launch globally on October 22, 2026. The title boasts an exceptionally wide release strategy, deploying simultaneously across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store, the original Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.

The narrative acts as an intentional homage to the golden age of 16-bit JRPGs. Players will guide a party of companions bound by absolute fate across a grand fantasy world threatened by an apocalyptic, world-ending force. The core gameplay loop centers around tactical turn-based battles that integrate a specialized “Stagger” system. Players must systematically exploit distinct elemental enemy weaknesses to break target defenses, rewarding the party with extra consecutive turns and unleashing high-damage “Resonance” team assaults. Furthermore, tactical depth is augmented by a “Visions” summoning system, allowing players to conjure spectral echoes of iconic legacy Final Fantasy characters to battle alongside the main party.
Visually, Final Fantasy Resonance merges classic pixel-art roots with modern production values, deploying dynamic cinematic camera shifts, detailed atmospheric lighting, and fully pixelized 3D environmental models. The world map will incorporate traditional series hallmarks including pilotable airships, magical crystals, summonable Espers, and Moogles.

Square Enix also confirmed an extensive endgame loop packed with optional side content. Completionists can hunt down the wandering dimension-traveling swordmaster Gilgamesh, test party builds in a dedicated combat Colosseum, challenge a grueling bosses-only gauntlet in the hidden Chamber of Arms, and gear up for a legendary ultimate confrontation against the franchise’s recurring superboss, Ultima Weapon.
Digital and physical pre-orders are live starting today, split between a Standard Edition for $49.99 and a Digital Deluxe Edition for $59.99. Pre-ordering either edition grants access to the Magitek Airship & Squire Starter Pack skin bundle alongside early-game experience-boosting equipment, while early buyers before launch will secure a separate Squire Kickstart Pack containing bonus currency-boosting armor.
