Nightdive Studios, Eidos-Montréal, and Atari have announced Thief: The Dark Project Remastered, a modernized revival of Looking Glass Studios’ definitive 1998 stealth classic.

Powered by Nightdive’s proprietary KEX Engine, the remastered package bundles the original base campaign alongside the bonus assignments, updates, and content from the 1999 Thief Gold expansion. The title is scheduled to debut this winter across PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Play Anywhere, Nintendo Switch & Switch 2, Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. Furthermore, Nintendo Switch version players will receive a free upgrade path to the Nintendo Switch 2 edition.
The first-person immersive sim tasks players with assuming the role of Garrett, a cynical street orphan turned cynical Master Thief who has gone rogue from the Keepers – a hidden organization focused on maintaining world equilibrium. As Garrett explores an industrial society rife with corruption, the foundational stealth mechanics force players to prioritize evasion over direct confrontation. Gameplay utilizes advanced sensory AI where environmental factors dictate detection; non-player characters realistically react, communicate, and sound alarms based on audible footsteps or unexpected light shifts. Garrett’s inventory consists of highly tactical tools, including douse-firing water arrows, noise-dampening moss arrows, misdirecting flashbombs, lockpicks, remote scouting cameras, and standard grapple rope arrows.
Thief’s remastering effort introduces a suite of modern quality-of-life additions while aiming to preserve the atmosphere of the classic layout. The technical update revamps textures, in-game character models, cinematics, and cutscenes. A revised user interface integrates an optimized item and weapon select wheel, alongside an intuitive mission selection interface. Additionally, the PC release features built-in compatibility for custom fan-made levels, allowing users to load and play community campaigns directly within the upgraded game client.
