Undead Labs and Xbox Game Studios shared the first official look at State of Decay 3 gameplay during the Xbox Games Showcase, slating the survival sequel for a 2027 launch. In a notable shift for the property, the upcoming title is confirmed for PlayStation 5 alongside the expected releases on Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store.

Developed on Unreal Engine 5, the new footage highlights an upgraded combat loop that expands standard character controls to include dedicated quick and heavy melee options. Enemies are heavily influenced by environmental degradation, with specialized behaviors determined by how decayed or heavily armored a zombie is. Players will navigate an interconnected landscape featuring massive, multi-stage Plague Nests. These hostile strongholds display distinct tactical traits that shift procedurally, changing how the environment reacts to survivor actions across different playthroughs.
The management sandbox allows up to four participants to experience a shared, asynchronous environment without being bound by traditional player-tethering restrictions. Survivors can collaborate on a unified home base or split up to establish and customize up to three unique settlements across a map that is roughly four times larger than previous game areas. This base-building framework utilizes an expanded crafting loop where modified weaponry carries practical weight and stamina penalties.
Public signups for upcoming alpha and beta testing phases are currently live on the developer’s dedicated registration site.
