Publisher Koei Tecmo and developer Team NINJA have announced FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly Remake, a full remake of the classic Japanese-style horror adventure originally released in 2003. The game is set to launch in early 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.

The remake follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura, who become lost in an abandoned village haunted by vengeful spirits. Players use the signature Camera Obscura to capture and seal away these restless apparitions, with the gameplay overhauled for improved visuals, audio, and controls. A new “Holding Hands with Mayu” mechanic deepens the emotional connection between the sisters, adding a more immersive layer to both exploration and combat.
As the story unfolds, the twins retrace the horrors of the past, uncovering the truth behind a forbidden ritual and navigating a village where night never ends. The village is filled with eerie environments, hidden secrets, and challenging supernatural encounters that capture the suspense and terror of the original title while expanding its narrative and mechanics for modern audiences.
