India-based developer Ayelet Studio has announced Son of Thanjai, a cinematic action adventure set in 11th century South India. The game is in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, though a release date has not yet been confirmed.

Set during the height of the Chola empire, the story places players in the role of a king navigating both personal legacy and political unrest. Thanjavur, once a thriving center of power, has grown unstable with whispers of betrayal, foreign interference, and shifting alliances. As the heir to a revered ruler, players must carve their own path while balancing the demands of duty with the weight of destiny.

The game promises a richly detailed world that reflects the culture, traditions, and architecture of South India in the 11th century. Players will explore the city of Thanjai and its surroundings, witness ceremonial performances, and interact with a variety of townsfolk whose responses change depending on how the king presents himself. Combat is equally immersive, blending stealth with direct confrontation. Battles feature fluid melee techniques inspired by the martial art of Kalarippayattu and emphasize the use of traditional weapons such as the whip-sword Surulvaal.
