The grand strategy game City States: Medieval is now available in demo form on PC via Steam, giving players an early opportunity to experience its blend of large-scale strategy and hands-on leadership ahead of its full release. Developed by Reverie World Studios and published by indie.io, the demo marks the first public look at the game’s core systems and campaign structure.

Set in a dynamic medieval world shaped by commerce, politics, and conflict, City States: Medieval places players in control of an ambitious city-state striving to expand its influence. Progress is driven not only by diplomacy, trade routes, and military planning, but also by the actions of a single Hero who serves as the strategic linchpin of the entire experience. This leader is more than a passive modifier, as their physical presence directly affects how cities operate and how conflicts unfold.
When the Hero is stationed within a city, players gain a more immediate, RTS-style level of control, allowing for faster construction, direct defense management, and active command of armies. Once the Hero ventures into the wider world, the city continues to function on the strategic map, though at a slower pace, with events and conflicts resolved on a broader scale. This creates a constant tension between consolidating power at home and pursuing opportunities abroad.
The demo draws from one of the game’s three planned campaigns and places players at the start of the Republic of Genoa storyline. Over several hours of gameplay, players travel across regions such as Italy and the Holy Land, encountering diverse cultures and political landscapes while learning how economic systems, alliances, and warfare are interconnected. Designed to reflect the pacing and depth of the full campaign, the demo offers a substantial introduction to the long-term decision-making that defines the experience.
