DaRmaZat Development studio SpaceRocket Games and publisher Toplitz Productions have debuted a new trailer for Permafrost at this year’s Summer Game Fest Green Games Showcase. The video reveals that the highly anticipated post-apocalyptic title will officially launch in Early Access on August 21, 2026, for PC via Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store. The announcement follows a highly successful Steam Next Fest run, where the game’s demo eclipsed 300,000 downloads.
Set in the grim aftermath of a cataclysmic event called “The Shattering”, the game drops players into a world entirely swallowed by ice, snow, and relentless sub-zero temperatures. Players step into the frozen boots of Rook, a tech-savvy engineer. Rook must navigate a tense, grounded open world where city ruins fade into silent wilderness, all while searching for a long-lost friend named Icarus. The overarching narrative challenges players to push back against hostile factions and predatory wildlife to bring what remains of a splintered society back together.
Permafrost prioritizes a realistic, exploration-gated progression loop free of fantasy tropes or constant gunfire. Advancement requires players to actively restore abandoned shelters, repair broken machinery, and reclaim fragile technology to withstand frostbite and brutal winter storms. Survivors can brave the frozen open world entirely solo alongside a rescued dog companion – who scouts ahead, warns of danger, and carries vital supplies – or form an alliance in a symbiotic cooperative multiplayer mode supporting up to four players.
While the Early Access launch is a few months away, a public playtest is scheduled to be detailed soon. Interested players can currently visit the official Steam product page to register for a chance to test the frozen wilderness early and provide development feedback.
