Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix, an action-adventure game, is set to launch on February 27 for PlayStation 4 & 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, publisher Limited Run Games and developer Implicit Conversions have announced. Originally released on the original PlayStation in 2001 by Kronos Digital Entertainment, this marks the first time the cult classic has been brought to modern platforms.

Set in 2048 Hong Kong, Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix serves as a prequel to the original Fear Effect, unfolding two years earlier and charting the origins of mercenaries Hana Tsu-Vachel, Royce Glas, Deke Decourt, and Rain Qin. The narrative moves between neon-lit urban environments and ancient locations tied to Chinese history, weaving together futuristic espionage, mythology, and supernatural elements into a tightly paced adventure.
The game is best known for its striking presentation, combining cel-shaded 3D character models with continuously streaming full-motion video backgrounds to create a graphic novel–like aesthetic that remains distinctive decades later. Combat and exploration are shaped by the signature “Fear Effect” system, where a character’s heart rate directly influences combat performance, encouraging a careful balance between aggression, stealth, and puzzle-solving.
This modern release includes a range of quality-of-life enhancements designed to preserve the original experience while adapting it to contemporary expectations. Features such as save states, rewind functionality, widescreen support, achievements, and optional CRT filters aim to make the prequel more accessible without altering its core design or tone.
