The pixel art action RPG Under the Island will launch on February 17 for PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, publisher Top Hat Studios and developer Slime King Games have announced.
Designed as a nostalgic tribute to 1990s-era adventure games, Under the Island places you in a colorful fantasy world defined by curiosity, exploration, and self-directed discovery. The game centers on Seashell Island, a vibrant land facing a mysterious catastrophe, as the island is slowly sinking into the ocean for reasons long forgotten.
You step into the role of Nia, a newcomer to the island whose arrival quickly spirals into trouble. After an uneasy introduction to island life and a rivalry with the sharp-tongued local Avocado, Nia uncovers the alarming truth behind Seashell Island’s fate. What begins as a simple adventure soon becomes a race to uncover ancient secrets and prevent the island’s disappearance.
Exploration lies at the heart of Under the Island, encouraging you to wander freely across interconnected regions shaped by changing weather and a dynamic day-and-night cycle. The island is home to multiple distinct biomes, each filled with hidden paths, environmental puzzles, and dungeons that range from surreal greenhouses to icy caverns and mechanical sawmills. Progression is driven by curiosity, experimentation, and the discovery of artifacts that unlock new abilities and approaches to combat.
Under The Island‘s combat blends action-driven encounters with playful creativity, pitting Nia against eccentric enemies that demand flexible strategies rather than brute force alone. The world reacts to player choices, with events, challenges, and encounters unfolding differently depending on the order in which locations are explored, reinforcing the sense of a personal journey shaped by discovery.
Along the way, you will meet a cast of memorable characters and animals, each contributing to the island’s personality and lore. By piecing together fragments of the island’s past, you will gradually uncover the truth behind its impending collapse and Nia’s role in its future.
