Square Enix Brings Major RPGs to Nintendo Switch 2 with New Trailers and Announcements

During yesterday’s global Nintendo Direct showcase, Square Enix stole the spotlight with a series of high-profile RPG reveals tailored for Switch 2. The presentation delivered fresh looks at three standout titles: Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles, and Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. These games will also launch on other major platforms including PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
The first announcement was the release of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, an enhanced version of the acclaimed full 3D remake that debuted last year. Players can now enjoy the generational saga with improved visuals, faster load times, and smoother performance. This standalone RPG tells the tale of an empire struggling to survive the onslaught of the Seven Heroes, blending turn-based combat with deep strategic elements.
The updated Switch 2 version also includes upgraded gameplay systems, new difficulty options, and the ability to switch between original and rearranged soundtracks. Players who own the original Switch release can upgrade via a dedicated Switch 2 Upgrade Pack. A free demo is available, and progress will carry over to the full game.
Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles was also spotlighted with a brand-new story trailer, showcasing its timeless narrative about political unrest and fractured friendship in the war-torn kingdom of Ivalice. This revamped tactical RPG enhances the 1997 classic with richer dialogue and expanded cinematic presentation.
The game is set to launch on September 30, 2025, and pre-orders are already live for Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. With both returning developers and fresh talent involved, this release aims to bridge nostalgia and innovation for tactical RPG fans.
The third highlight came from Japan’s Nintendo Direct, where Square Enix revealed new gameplay footage for Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. The trailer confirmed Princess of Cannock as a playable character for the first time in the franchise’s history, joining her brother in the fight to save the world. These two legendary RPGs have been completely rebuilt in the visually striking HD-2D style popularized by Octopath Traveler and Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake.
Narrative enhancements, refined combat mechanics, and quality-of-life improvements promise to deliver a fresh yet faithful experience. The remake launches digitally on October 30, 2025, as part of the Dragon Quest HD-2D Erdrick Trilogy Collection, which also includes Dragon Quest III.
