METRO 2039 is set to release this winter on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store & Microsoft Store, marking the next chapter in the long-running series from 4A Games and publisher Deep Silver.
Taking place decades after nuclear devastation, METRO 2039 returns to the underground tunnels beneath Moscow, where survivors remain confined within a fractured and tightly controlled society. Now unified under the Novoreich and led by a figure known as Hunter, the Metro operates under an authoritarian structure shaped by propaganda and restricted access to the outside world, despite promises of a future on the surface.
The story follows The Stranger, a reclusive figure drawn back into the Metro after attempting to leave it behind. Unlike previous entries, the protagonist is fully voiced, adding a more defined narrative presence to the journey.
METRO 2039‘s structure remains rooted in the series’ hallmark blend of first-person shooting, psychological tension, and environmental storytelling, with gameplay sequences transitioning between real-time cinematics and direct player control.
The game’s development reflects the background of 4A Games as a Ukrainian-founded studio, with current events influencing the narrative’s focus on consequence, survival, and the cost of rebuilding. While shaped by that perspective, the project maintains the identity associated with the series, emphasizing atmosphere, isolation, and the persistent threat of both human and mutated dangers.
