Atmospheric Puzzle-Adventure Helix: Descent N Ascent Debuts Demo and New Trailer

Belgian indie studio Badass Mongoose has released a playable demo for atmospheric puzzle-adventure Helix: Descent N Ascent, now available on PC via Steam. The demo is participating in Steam Next Fest: February 2026 Edition, running from February 23 to March 2. Alongside the demo, the studio premiered a dedicated trailer showcasing the game’s monochrome aesthetic and core puzzle mechanics.

The demo offers approximately 30 minutes of gameplay, introducing players to the game’s black-and-white world and its central mechanics. During this hands-on preview, players gain access to three abilities that can be applied to environmental puzzles and exploration challenges. A mysterious dark counterpart—mirroring the protagonist—actively interferes throughout the experience, creating both mechanical and thematic tension.

Helix: Descent N Ascent blends exploration and puzzle-solving with a distinctive mix-and-match ability system. As players progress, they unlock embodied powers that can be combined in multiple configurations, enabling varied approaches to environmental obstacles. The system supports 25 distinct playstyle variations across three levels of complexity, encouraging experimentation and layered problem-solving within interconnected spaces.

Set in a forgotten world where ancient forces awaken within the protagonist, the narrative unfolds without traditional dialogue. Instead, story elements are conveyed through environmental design, symbolic imagery, and player interpretation. Themes of identity, solitude, duality, and fractured relationships are woven into both gameplay and presentation, reinforced by the recurring presence of the protagonist’s doppelganger.

Visually, the game features striking 4K monochrome artwork inspired by 1980s black-and-white indie comics, 1990s manga, and 1970s Franco-Belgian comics. Living 2D scenery and painterly compositions emphasize the contrast between light and darkness. The atmosphere is further elevated by an original soundtrack composed by Jim Guthrie, known for his work on Sword & Sworcery, Nobody Saves the World, and Below.

Helix: Descent N Ascent is scheduled to launch in Q2 2026 for PC via Steam and Nintendo Switch. The demo is available now as part of Steam Next Fest.
