Publisher 4Divinity and developer Hoothanes have announced The Defiant, a story-driven first-person shooter set during China’s War of Resistance against Japan in World War II. The game is in development for PC via Steam and consoles.

While many World War II games revisit familiar battlegrounds in Western Europe and North Africa, The Defiant shifts focus to the Asian theater—an immense and brutal conflict that has seen little representation in interactive media. The game aims to reframe how historical FPS titles approach the war by centering its narrative on resistance, survival, and cultural identity.
A newly released trailer offers a first look at the game’s tone, locations, and combat, highlighting environments such as occupied villages, frozen forests, fortified supply routes, and enemy-controlled urban zones. According to 4Divinity, the experience is designed to balance cinematic spectacle with historical grounding.
Combat in The Defiant is built around the realities of guerrilla warfare, featuring a mix of stealth infiltration, close-quarters firefights, sniping, urban espionage, code-breaking missions, vehicular combat, and large-scale assaults. Rather than fixed frontlines, the game emphasizes tension, unpredictability, and tactical decision-making.
Built in Unreal Engine 5 by a team with backgrounds in both film and game development, The Defiant takes a restrained, human-centered storytelling approach. Weapons are treated as historical artifacts, with firearms such as the Hanyang Type 88, Mauser C96, and Bergmann submachine gun recreated with attention to their historical origins and wartime roles.
