Bethesda has released Infestations, marking the 68th free content update for multiplayer action-RPG Fallout 76.
Since its initial debut, Fallout 76 has averaged roughly eight free content and system overhauls annually. The brand-new Infestations update is currently live across PC via Steam, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4, and remains available through the Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Extra subscription catalogs.
Fallout 76‘s latest expansion introduces highly volatile, dynamic combat zones across 40 familiar outdoor locations in Appalachia. The primary mechanical addition involves hostile enemy takeovers that completely transform the traditional population of established landmarks. When an Infestation event triggers, standard regional enemies are swapped out for a unified hostile faction. Players must fight through waves of these invading forces to draw out and defeat an elite boss encounter. These dynamic events can occur simultaneously across major maps including The Forest, Savage Divide, Ash Heap, The Mire, Toxic Valley, and Cranberry Bog. While the content automatically scales to a player’s current level to accommodate solo play, it is optimized for cooperative teams.
Successful clearance of an Infested area guarantees high-tier endgame loot. Overcoming the final elite boss grants players Four-Star Legendary weapons or armor pieces, featuring specific modifications that cannot be sourced anywhere else in the Wasteland. Standard event completion also dispenses baseline resources such as caps, chems, bobbleheads, and collectible magazines.
To mark the launch, a community initiative titled the “P.R.O.T.E.C.T. Protocol” will host a week of free in-game rewards from June 7 to June 15, 2026, alongside a complimentary trial week of the premium Fallout 1st subscription running from June 8 to June 15.
Parallel to the update, Bethesda also revealed that a native current-gen upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S is slated for a summer 2026 launch following an open playtest in June. The upcoming native upgrade focuses heavily on visual fidelity and performance enhancements tailored for current-gen hardware.
Players can expect a targeted 60 frames per second (FPS) across Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 5 Pro. Visual overhauls include improved draw distances and upgraded shadow quality. Furthermore, native 4K resolution alongside Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support will be available on compatible displays for Xbox Series X, Xbox One X, and PlayStation 5 Pro. While previous-generation platforms remain locked at 1080p, both the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 Pro will natively support a 1440p output.
