The interactive fiction visual novel After the Wane from developer Nova-box now has a playable demo available on PC via a separate page on Steam, giving players their first chance to experience part of the narrative-driven adventure ahead of its planned full release later in 2026.

According to the developers, the separate page for the demo is a deliberate strategy aimed at improving the game’s visibility within Steam’s recommendation systems, as downloads and user reviews directly contribute to how widely the title is surfaced to new players.
After the Wane centers on Lena, a young dancer trying to carve out a future in the city while searching for the mother she never knew. Her personal journey quickly becomes more complicated as she finds herself caught in tensions between rival dance companies, navigating relationships, heartbreak, and the uncertainties of young adulthood. At the same time, Lena must contend with a mysterious inner voice that comments on her every decision, introducing an unsettling layer to the story.
Like previous titles from the studio, the game blends illustrated storytelling with meaningful player choices that shape the direction of the narrative. Decisions influence Lena’s relationships, her artistic ambitions, and the paths she takes through the story, encouraging multiple playthroughs to uncover different outcomes.
Earlier developer updates have also revealed some of the project’s creative ambitions. The first devlog introduced After the Wane as Nova-box’s most ambitious project to date and showcased the use of rotoscoped animation to bring dance movements to life. The second devlog explored the technical implementation of those sequences and how real performances by professional dancers were captured and translated into the game.
The visual novel continues the creative lineage of Nova-box’s earlier narrative-driven projects such as Along the Edge and Across the Grooves, combining hand-illustrated artwork, magical realism, and choice-driven storytelling. While the demo is now available on PC via Steam, the full game is also planned for release on Nintendo Switch later in 2026.
