“I’m the Batter. I’ve been entrusted with a sacred mission.” These haunting words open a journey unlike any other. OFF, an influential cult RPG originally released over fifteen years ago, finally makes its Steam debut on August 15, courtesy of Mortis Ghost and Fangamer. Step into the shoes of The Batter, a prophet-like figure tasked with purifying a bizarre and eerie world from impure spirits, guided by an enigmatic and slyly grinning cat known simply as The Judge.

This is not your average RPG. OFF is a poetic dance of puzzles, turn-based combat, and cryptic narrative threads woven into a dreamlike, often disorienting landscape that challenges your perception of morality, purpose, and existence itself.
A Labyrinthine World Where Nothing Is Quite What It Seems
Set within a fragmented universe of numbered zones, OFF places you in a surreal, minimalist world reminiscent of old Game Boy aesthetics but laced with unsettling mystery. The environments vary dramatically: some linear and straightforward, others winding, maze-like, and shrouded in near-darkness, evoking both claustrophobia and curiosity.
Movement can feel rigid and demanding, requiring pixel-perfect navigation as The Batter awkwardly bumps against obstacles and edges, reinforcing the sense of entrapment in a realm that resists smooth traversal. The game’s world map, the “Nothingness,” is a haunting void speckled with green patches that resemble plants but pulse with eerie whispers and distant birdcalls, creating an atmosphere thick with unease and beauty alike.
Traveling between zones is facilitated by a network of swan boats and trams, which, along with puzzles, form the backbone of exploration. Some puzzles start out deceptively simple—such as rearranging blocks for passage—but gradually devolve into trial and error, requiring patience amid frustration.

A Strange Dance of Strategy and Surrealism
The original OFF, developed with RPG Maker and released in 2008 on PC, laid the groundwork for later indie hits like Undertale and its successor Deltarune. Its turn-based combat, atmospheric storytelling, and surreal world-building have inspired a generation of game developers.
Enemies inflict a range of status effects — migraine, lethargy, and more — while reinforcements can suddenly join the fray, turning once-manageable encounters into frantic challenges. Allies, known as Add-ons, merge with you in battle, adding depth and personality to fights. The Batter’s health and “Competence Points” deplete as you roam, and must later be restored at select checkpoints featuring mysterious suitcases that double as save points. The soundtrack here is a highlight, shifting between relaxing melodies and sharp modern jazz that underscores the uncanny, playful, and sometimes chaotic nature of combat.
Yet, the frequent random encounters can make battles feel repetitive, with the constant influx of foes disrupting the pacing as you attempt to escape the labyrinthine zones. Thankfully, a “Flee” option is sometimes available, giving moments of reprieve. Experience points and currency reward victory, allowing for gradual growth, but the combat loop’s rhythm is not for everyone.

A World of Paradox, Satire, and Unfathomable Purpose
OFF’s narrative and atmosphere are steeped in surrealism and satire. It mocks bureaucracy, hierarchy, and the so-called “logical order” of society through cryptic dialogue and bizarre worldbuilding — where, for example, smoke is touted as essential for breathing. The cryptic Judge guides you with an unsettling mix of charm and menace, while the Batter’s mission raises uncomfortable questions about violence, purity, and the true cost of “cleansing.”
The game offers little handholding, leaving players often adrift without clear purpose. This ambiguity is intentional, emphasizing experience over clarity. The dreamlike, almost parodic tone will captivate some, while leaving others puzzled or frustrated. OFF is less a traditional game and more an evocative journey through a nightmarish, melancholic reverie.

Final Thoughts
OFF’s Steam release is a chance to revisit (or discover) one of the most thought-provoking indie RPGs of the last 15 years. Its strikingly minimal graphics, layered soundtrack, and unconventional narrative design create a uniquely haunting experience. However, its punishing difficulty spikes, rigid controls, and relentless random encounters may limit its appeal.
Still, if you are drawn to surreal stories, philosophical undertones, and a blend of unsettling beauty with cryptic gameplay, OFF offers a deeply memorable adventure into the unknown — a sacred mission that asks more questions than it answers, inviting players to confront the mysteries of the soul.
